## How long can a LinkedIn post be? Every LinkedIn character limit, with its source.

A LinkedIn post can be up to 3,000 characters, according to LinkedIn's Help Center. Past that, LinkedIn suggests writing an article on its publishing platform instead. A post in a LinkedIn group has the same 3,000-character limit.

| Field | Characters | Where it's from |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Post | 3,000 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| [Headline](https://tools.joinvalley.co/linkedin-headline-character-limit) | 220 | Not published by LinkedIn. 220 is the reported figure. |
| About section | 2,600 | LinkedIn Talent Blog |
| Comment | 1,250 | LinkedIn Help Center, for comments in groups. None published for the feed. |
| [Connection request note](https://tools.joinvalley.co/linkedin-connection-request-character-limit) | 200 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| InMail subject | 200 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| InMail message | 1,900 | LinkedIn Help Center. One older FAQ says 2,000. |
| Group post | 3,000 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| Company Page tagline | 120 | LinkedIn Learning |
| Company Page overview | 2,000 | LinkedIn Learning |

We count spaces, line breaks and punctuation, the way a browser text box does. Emoji and some symbols count as 2. LinkedIn doesn't say how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

## How it works

Paste your post and the counter shows the characters used against that field's limit, what's left, and where your text would stop if it's over. It also shows every other LinkedIn field it would fit. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.

It counts the way a browser text box does: in UTF-16 code units, so spaces, line breaks and punctuation count, and an emoji can count as 2. It tells you when that happens. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

The 3,000 is from LinkedIn's Help Center page on posting and sharing updates. The group-post limit is from LinkedIn's page of general limits for groups.

## What else limits a LinkedIn post. From LinkedIn's Help Center.

The 3,000 characters is the one most people hit. In groups there are a few more.

### Over 3,000 characters? Write an article

LinkedIn doesn't let a post run past 3,000 characters. Its Help Center points you to its publishing platform instead, where you can write an article.

If you'd rather keep it a post, the counter shows where your text would stop, so you can see what to cut.

### Posting in a LinkedIn group

A group post has the same 3,000-character limit. LinkedIn also caps how often you post: 15 posts a week in a single group, posts in up to 20 groups a week, and 60 posts across all groups.

You can mention up to 20 people in one conversation.

### How the counter counts

A browser text box measures length in UTF-16 code units, which is usually but not always one per character. Most letters, spaces and line breaks are one each. Many emoji are two.

We count the same way, and show the difference when your text has characters that count as two. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so if you're within a couple of characters of a limit, check in LinkedIn itself.
