We count spaces, line breaks and punctuation, the way a browser text box does. Emoji and some symbols count as 2. LinkedIn doesn't say how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

How it works
How this tool works. And what it can't see.
Paste your connection request note and the counter shows the characters used against that field's limit, what's left, and where your text would stop if it's over. It also shows every other LinkedIn field it would fit. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.
It counts the way a browser text box does: in UTF-16 code units, so spaces, line breaks and punctuation count, and an emoji can count as 2. It tells you when that happens. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.
The 200 characters and the three-a-month quota are both from LinkedIn's Help Center page on personalizing invitations to connect.

The connection note
200 characters, three times a month. So make each note count.
The quota matters more than the character limit on a free account.

Three personal notes a month on a free account
LinkedIn lets free members add a personal note to up to three connection requests a month. Premium members can add one to every invitation.
Each note can be up to 200 characters.

What fits in 200 characters
One reason to connect that's about them, and nothing to sell. The example above is a note like that, well inside the limit. Save the pitch for after they accept, if at all.
That's our view, not a rule LinkedIn publishes.

How the counter counts
A browser text box measures length in UTF-16 code units, which is usually but not always one per character. Most letters, spaces and line breaks are one each. Many emoji are two.
We count the same way, and show the difference when your text has characters that count as two. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so if you're within a couple of characters of a limit, check in LinkedIn itself.
