The limits

How many characters can a LinkedIn headline have?Every LinkedIn character limit, with its source.

LinkedIn doesn't publish a headline limit in its Help Center. The number people report, from counting what the field accepts, is 220 characters, up from 120 in August 2020. The headline field on your profile is the final word: paste yours there to check.

We count spaces, line breaks and punctuation, the way a browser text box does. Emoji and some symbols count as 2. LinkedIn doesn't say how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

How it works

How this tool works. And what it can't see.

Paste your headline and the counter shows the characters used against that field's limit, what's left, and where your text would stop if it's over. It also shows every other LinkedIn field it would fit. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.

It counts the way a browser text box does: in UTF-16 code units, so spaces, line breaks and punctuation count, and an emoji can count as 2. It tells you when that happens. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

Because LinkedIn publishes no headline limit, the counter marks 220 as reported, not published. We read the figure, and the note that LinkedIn's Help Center doesn't state it, in Commenti's write-up of 3 Oct 2026.

The headline

Why we say reported, not published. And what that means for yours.

Most pages state 220 as if LinkedIn had published it. It hasn't, as far as anyone has found.

  1. 01

    Where 220 comes from

LinkedIn doesn't state a headline limit anywhere in its Help Center. The 220 circulates because people counted what the field accepts, after LinkedIn raised it from 120 in August 2020.

So treat 220 as a working number, and let the headline field on your profile have the last word.

  2. 02

    Mobile and desktop

Some people report that the mobile editor accepts a few more characters than the desktop one. Nobody has tied that to a LinkedIn document, so we wouldn't plan around it.

  3. 03

    How the counter counts

A browser text box measures length in UTF-16 code units, which is usually but not always one per character. Most letters, spaces and line breaks are one each. Many emoji are two.

We count the same way, and show the difference when your text has characters that count as two. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so if you're within a couple of characters of a limit, check in LinkedIn itself.
