The limits
What are LinkedIn's character limits?Every field, with where the number comes from.
A LinkedIn post holds up to 3,000 characters, an About section 2,600, a connection request note 200, and an InMail a 200-character subject and a 1,900-character body. LinkedIn doesn't publish a headline limit; 220 is the number people report.
| Field | Characters | Where it's from |
|---|---|---|
| Post | 3,000 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| Headline | 220 | Not published by LinkedIn. 220 is the reported figure. |
| About section | 2,600 | LinkedIn Talent Blog |
| Comment | 1,250 | LinkedIn Help Center, for comments in groups. None published for the feed. |
| Connection request note | 200 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| InMail subject | 200 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| InMail message | 1,900 | LinkedIn Help Center. One older FAQ says 2,000. |
| Group post | 3,000 | LinkedIn Help Center |
| Company Page tagline | 120 | LinkedIn Learning |
| Company Page overview | 2,000 | LinkedIn Learning |
We count spaces, line breaks and punctuation, the way a browser text box does. Emoji and some symbols count as 2. LinkedIn doesn't say how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

How it works
How this tool works. And what it can't see.
Paste a LinkedIn post, headline, About section, comment, connection note or InMail, pick where it's going, and the counter shows the characters used against that field's limit, what's left, and where your text would stop if it's over. It also shows every other LinkedIn field it would fit. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.
It counts the way a browser text box does: in UTF-16 code units, so spaces, line breaks and punctuation count, and an emoji can count as 2. It tells you when that happens. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.
Each limit links to where it comes from. Most are in LinkedIn's Help Center. Two aren't: LinkedIn publishes no headline limit, so we use the 220 people report and say so, and its comment limit is published for groups only.

Before you hit post
Three things about LinkedIn's limits. And one about how we count.
The limits are only half of it. Here's what changes how much you can actually write.
- 01
Some limits come with a quota
A connection request note can be 200 characters, but on a free account LinkedIn lets you add a note to three connection requests a month. Premium members can personalize every invitation.
InMail is metered too: Premium Career gets 5 a month, Premium Business 15 and Sales Navigator Core 50, with the credit returned when someone accepts.

LinkedIn's own pages don't always agree
LinkedIn's InMail character limits page and its Sales Navigator help both put an InMail body at 1,900 characters. Its InMail FAQ says 2,000. We count against 1,900, so a message that fits here fits everywhere.

Posts over 3,000 characters
LinkedIn's Help Center says a post can hold 3,000 characters, and suggests writing an article on its publishing platform when you need more.

How the counter counts
A browser text box measures length in UTF-16 code units, which is usually but not always one per character. Most letters, spaces and line breaks are one each. Many emoji are two.
We count the same way, and show the difference when your text has characters that count as two. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so if you're within a couple of characters of a limit, check in LinkedIn itself.

Questions
Questions people ask.
- What is the character limit on LinkedIn?
- It depends on the field: 3,000 characters for a post, 2,600 for the About section, 1,250 for a comment in a group, 200 for a connection request note, and 200 for an InMail subject with 1,900 for its body.
- How many characters can a LinkedIn post have?
- Up to 3,000, according to LinkedIn's Help Center. Group posts have the same limit.
- How many characters can a LinkedIn connection note have?
- 200, according to LinkedIn's Help Center. On a free account you can add a note to three connection requests a month.
- Do spaces count as characters on LinkedIn?
- In this counter, yes: spaces, line breaks and punctuation all count, the way a browser text box counts them. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.
- Do emoji count as two characters?
- Many do in a browser text box, which counts in UTF-16 code units. The counter shows when your text has characters like that. LinkedIn doesn't say how it counts them.
- Is this LinkedIn character counter free?
- Yes. It's free, needs no signup and runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
