The limits

How long can a LinkedIn InMail be?Every LinkedIn character limit, with its source.

An InMail can have a subject of up to 200 characters and a body of up to 1,900, according to LinkedIn's InMail character limits page and its Sales Navigator help. LinkedIn's InMail FAQ says 2,000 for the body; we count against 1,900, so a message that fits here fits everywhere.

We count spaces, line breaks and punctuation, the way a browser text box does. Emoji and some symbols count as 2. LinkedIn doesn't say how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

How it works

How this tool works. And what it can't see.

Paste your InMail subject or message, pick which, and the counter shows the characters used against that field's limit, what's left, and where your text would stop if it's over. It also shows every other LinkedIn field it would fit. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.

It counts the way a browser text box does: in UTF-16 code units, so spaces, line breaks and punctuation count, and an emoji can count as 2. It tells you when that happens. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so leave a few characters spare.

The 200 and 1,900 are from LinkedIn's InMail character limits page and its Sales Navigator help. The 2,000 and the monthly InMail credits are from LinkedIn's InMail Messages FAQ.

InMail

1,900 or 2,000?And how many InMails you get.

LinkedIn's own pages give two numbers for the body. Here's which one we use, and why.

  1. 01

    Two numbers for the body

LinkedIn's InMail character limits page says up to 200 characters in the required subject line and up to 1,900 in the body. Its Sales Navigator help gives the same 200 and 1,900.

Its InMail Messages FAQ says up to 2,000 in the body and calls the subject optional. We count against 1,900, the lower one.

  2. 02

How many InMails you get a month

It depends on your plan: 5 a month on Premium Career, 15 on Premium Business, 50 on Sales Navigator Core, 5 per job on LinkedIn Hiring Pro, and 30 a month up to 90 in total on Premium All-in-One.

You get the credit back when the person accepts your InMail.

  3. 03

    How the counter counts

A browser text box measures length in UTF-16 code units, which is usually but not always one per character. Most letters, spaces and line breaks are one each. Many emoji are two.

We count the same way, and show the difference when your text has characters that count as two. LinkedIn doesn't publish how it counts, so if you're within a couple of characters of a limit, check in LinkedIn itself.
